Take this customer. He has a small retail store. He wanted to reduce his credit card fees so he put an ATM in his business and he only charges $1. If you pay cash- you receive a discount vs. paying credit card fees. This merchant owns his ATM machine, and provides the vault cash. The ATM only does 5 or 6 transactions a day, but the ATM dispenses over $500 on an average day. Roughly half of the dispensed cash goes into his register. Although his monthly surcharge income is only around $150- now he receives $7500 per month in cash! On top of putting more cash in his register he reduces his credit card expense. Credit card fees usually account for 2-3% of total sales. So 2% of $7500 = $150 in credit card fees. So to earn that $7500, instead of making $150 from the ATM, he would pay $150 in swipe fees to the credit card company. Just by installing an ATM, this merchant will save a minimum of $1800 per year in credit card fee savings alone- and he will have made an additional $1800 in surcharge income. Now that is what we call one smart business owner!
